"The View from Saturday" written by E.L. Konigsburg is a Newbery Award-winning book in the genre of realistic fiction. E.L. Konigsburg depicts four sixth graders and their middle school teacher on their journey to win an Academic Bowl. Each of the six graders tells stories from his or her point of view. The four children become close friends despite their different personalities. "The View from Saturday" is a good book for kids in middle school.

"James and the Giant Peach" by Roald Dahl is an imaginative children's fantasy book. After James Trotter drops magic crystals by the peach tree, the peach at the top of the tree grows to an enormous size; so do some insects under the peach tree. James escapes from his nasty aunts and embarks on a great adventure with his giant insect friends in the giant peach. Many kids will find the story funny and exciting, although the chapter book has a slightly dark side. "James and the Giant Peach" appeals to children in 4th grade through 7th grade.

The main characters of "The Witches" by Roald Dahl are a boy named Charlie and his Norwegian grandma. She knows a lot about witches, and tells Charlie stories about them. While taking a summer vacation at a hotel in England, the boy is trapped in a room full of witches and finds out about their plot to get rid of children, but the Grand High Witch turns him into a mouse. In the end, Charlie manages to foil the witches' evil scheme with the help of his grandma. Quentin Blake's illustrations complements Roald Dahl's style very well. This scary and humorous story appeals to children in 4th grade through 7th grade.

"Sing Down the Moon" by Scott O'Dell is a historical fiction about Navajo Indians in the 1860's. Main character Bright Morning is a brave American Indian girl. She escapes from slavery after being captured by Spaniards. Then she is forced to move to Fort Sumner in a long march known as the Long Walk. She eventually flees for freedom. "Sing Down the Moon", an engaging Newbery honor book, appeals to children in 4th grade and up.

In the chapter book "Stone Fox", by John Reynolds Gardiner, main character little Willy enters a dogsled race in order to win prize money and save his grandfather's farm from tax collectors. One of the other racers is Stone Fox, a Native American who has never lost a dog sled race. Children in third grade through sixth grade will enjoy this inspiring story about little Willy and his loyal dog Searchlight. "Stone Fox" is a great book to read aloud.

The story's main character Wanda Petronski, a Polish-American girl from a poor family, is teased by classmates at school for being different and for saying she has one hundred dresses at home while she is wearing the same faded dress to school every day. Only after Wanda's absence from school do Maddie and Peggy find out the true story about the one hundred dresses and try to make amends. "The Hundred Dresses", one of the best chapter books of the 20th century, appeals to kids in second grade through sixth grade.

In this humorous animal fantasy book, the Monroe family finds a bunny in a movie theater and names the animal Bunnicula. Chester the cat suspects Bunnicula is a vampire rabbit. Children in elementary school will enjoy reading this funny mystery story.

"Sarah, Plain and Tall" is one of the best children's books. Kids in second grade through sixth grade will enjoy this classic chapter book.
