"Because of Winn-Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo, a 2001 Newbery Honor book, tells a heartwarming story about love, friendship and tolerance. Main characters of the realistic fiction book are Opal Buloni, a 10-year-old girl, and Winn-Dixie, the dog she has found in the town grocery store. Opal has just moved to Naomi, Florida with her preacher father. Her mother left them seven years ago. Because of Winn-Dixie, Opal makes new friends. Among them are Gloria Dump, a kind old lady called a witch by children, Miss Franny Block, a librarian who loves to tell stories, and Otis, a pet shop worker who plays music to animals. These quirky characters are part of the charm of the chapter book. "Because of Winn-Dixie" appeals to children in 4th grade through 7th grade.

Byron Barton, in "The Three Bears", retells the classic European folklore tale of Goldilocks and the three bears. The story begins with three bears taking a walk in the forest. While the bears are away from home, Goldilocks eats their porridge, sits in their chairs and sleeps in baby bear's bed. The story ends with Goldilocks running away from the three bears. The simplified vocabulary and the bold illustrations are well suited for toddlers and preschoolers. The picture book also teaches opposites such as hot or cold, big or small, fast or slow. "The Three Bears" is a good read aloud book.

If the boy gives the mouse a cookie, the mouse will ask for a glass of milk. The milk will lead to a straw, and straw will lead to a napkin, so on and so forth. The humorous story ends with the mouse asking a glass of milk and then a cookie. This classic children's picture book encourages kids to make predictions and teaches cause and effect in a fun way. Felicia Bond's detailed and humorous illustrations closely match vocabulary words and bring the main characters to life. "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" is a great book to read aloud to children in preschool and kindergarten.

The adorable pig in If You Give a Pig a Pancake is back with a tale of great party fun. The sequence of events starts with a girl's offer to give a pig a party. The pig then asks for balloons to decorate the house, puts on her favorite dress and invites her friends to the party. The pig's friends, a mouse, a moose and more, are attending a street fair, so the pig joins them for the rides and games. After returning home, the girl plays hide and seek with the animals. Children will have fun trying to find the animals hiding in the back yard. Then the pig wants a sleepover and the animals have a pillow fight. The story ends with the pig asking for another party. Felicia Bond's humorous illustrations are simple and delightful. This creative book can be used to teach the concept of cause and effect. If You Give a Pig a Party is a good book to read aloud to children in preschool, kindergarten and first grade.

Preschoolers, kindergarteners and beginning readers will enjoy this Caldecott honor book by Robert McCloskey. "Blueberries for Sal" is one of the best picture books for children.

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile by Bernard Waber Lyle is an engaging classical children's book with colorful and expressive illustrations. Lyle the Crocodile is happy living with the Primm family on East 88th Street. However, Mr. Grumps, his neighbor, doesn't like Lyle at all. When the crocodile does an impromptu performance with his former stage partner Hector Valenti in Mr. Grumps' department store, Mr. Grumps gets so furious that he arranges to have Lyle locked in the zoo. Lyle escapes and rescues Mr. Grumps from a fire. With an interesting story and a rich vocabulary, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is a good picture book for children in preschool, kindergarten and first grade.
